On the Normality of Numbers

چکیده
A number is normal to the base r if, in its expansion to that base, all possible digit strings of length t are equally frequent for each t. While it is generally believed that many familiar irrational constants are normal, normality has only been proven for numbers expressly invented for the purpose of proving their normality. In this study we give an overview of the main results to date. We then define a new normality criterion, strong normality, to exclude certain normal but clearly non-random artificial numbers. We show that strongly normal numbers are normal but that Champernowne’s number, the best-known example of a normal number, fails to be strongly normal. We also re-frame the question of normality as a question about the frequency of modular residue classes of a sequence of integers. This leads to the beginning of a detailed examination of the digits of square roots.

Strong Normality and Generalized Copeland–erdős Numbers
We prove that an infinite class of Copeland-Erdős numbers is not strongly normal and provide the analogous result for Bugeaud’s Mahler-inspired extension of the Copeland-Erdős numbers. After the presentation of our results, we o↵er several open questions concerning normality and strong normality.
متن کاملThe limiting distribution of the q-derangement numbers
We prove the normality of the limiting distribution of the coefficients of the q-derangement numbers of type B based on the formula of Foata and Han that contains a parameter z. Setting the parameter z to zero, we are led to the case of ordinary q-derangement numbers. For z = 1, we obtain the normality of the distribution of the coefficients of the usual q-derangement numbers of type B.
متن کاملArithmetic Properties of Class Numbers of Imaginary Quadratic Fields
Under the assumption of the well-known heuristics of Cohen and Lenstra (and the new extensions we propose) we give proofs of several new properties of class numbers of imaginary quadratic number fields, including theorems on smoothness and normality of their divisors. Some applications in cryptography are also discussed.
متن کاملOn the Canonical-Based Goodness-of-fit Tests for Multivariate Skew-Normality
It is well-known that the skew-normal distribution can provide an alternative model to the normal distribution for analyzing asymmetric data. The aim of this paper is to propose two goodness-of-fit tests for assessing whether a sample comes from a multivariate skew-normal (MSN) distribution. We address the problem of multivariate skew-normality goodness-of-fit based on the empirical Laplace tra...
متن کاملNormal numbers and normality measure
The normality measure N has been introduced by Mauduit and Sárközy in order to describe the pseudorandomness properties of finite binary sequences. Alon, Kohayakawa, Mauduit, Moreira and Rödl proved that the minimal possible value of the normality measure of an N -element binary sequence satisfies
